Permit Guide
Lake Tahoe has no entrance fee, but boats require inspection and the backcountry requires a permit.
Boat AIS Inspection
RequiredHow: All motorized watercraft must stop at one of three inspection stations before launching. Mandatory decontamination fee: $30. Book an appointment at TahoeBoatInspections.com.
When: Required every launch. Stations open May 1–Sep 30, 8:30am–5:30pm. Last inspection 4:30pm.

Desolation Wilderness Permit
RequiredHow: Day use permit (free, self-issue at trailhead). Overnight permit required — apply at recreation.gov. Quota enforced June 15 through Labor Day.
When: Overnight permits: book at recreation.gov up to 2 weeks in advance.
💡 Day hiking in Desolation is permit-free — just self-register at the trailhead kiosk
Fire Restrictions
