Kayaking Kailua Bay Oahu

October 15, 2008 by TrailsTV

The best thing about Kayaking in Kailua Bay is the beauty of the fine white sandy beaches on Lanikai Beach, the snorkeling right off shore, the beauty of both Flat Island and Mokulua.

Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks Inc, lets you view the area in the best possible conditions. In our case we had several small rain showers as well as a little chop. Keep in mind, my wife had never been kayaking before we actually got into one. So a little coaching and we were out the door…

Our adventure started with Nate, our guide originally from Michigan, explaining the basics before we even got out to the kayaks. Reggae blaring from the computer and a cool set of photos on the projector… Nate, if you’re reading this, may we call you Nate Dog? Yes? No?

We got our intro and off we went, grabbed our kayaks, masks, snorkels and down the street we walked… About 100 yards to the beach, then we’re off… A short kayak out past flat island and we landed on the west side of kailua beach…

The interesting part started here… Lunch a little snorkeling and a bit of rain… After the rain subsided a bit, we hopped in the kayaks and went back out to flat island… Juliet sliced her foot open on some coral and we needed to go… Nate, the guide, was awesome… we got back in the kayaks and rowed back to Kailua Beach then walked back to the store…

IMPORTANT: take dry clothes, leave them in the lock boxes so you have them… We didn’t, don’t know why, but, we didn’t…

Sounds like a fun outing, despite the foot injury and the lack of dry clothes to change into.

I lived on Kauai from 1996-1999. Did a lot of snorkeling and a bit of kayaking. For anybody going, do the Napali Coast if you have experience, and some smaller coast trips and the rivers if you’re relatively new to sea kayaking.

Try Kayak Kauai at http://www.kayakkauai.com. If you see Micco, one of the owners, tell him John Soares says Aloha.

Juliet is my daughter. Seeing that picture of her foot makes me want to say it is NOT worth it…but that’s just me being a mom. Glad I wasn’t there….can you say FAINT?
